When it comes to Iowa, there’s more to offer than just pork and corn. Its history includes German settlements in Amana. Dutch settlements in Pella. Numerous Swedish and Danish settlements across the state. Not to be ignored are the many Native peoples who preceded them, such as the Sac, Fox, Ioway, and Winnebago. It includes Mormon pioneers blazing their trail from Montrose to Council Bluffs. As the birthplace of the Tommy Gun, computers, and sliced bread, Iowa’s past is both rich and fascinating!
Originally commissioned as Highway 60 in 1920, Iowa’s Highway 5 travels 105 miles from the Missouri border to Iowa’s capitol city. Rob’s debut offering takes us on a journey from the rural Iowa/Missouri state line (home to fireworks stands and cheap tobacco), through the rolling hills and valleys of South Central Iowa, all the way to the heart of Iowa.
Journey along as we visit the cities, towns, and villages, past and present, along this route and learn their remarkable stories and histories. Whether you’re a history fan, looking for stops on a weekend road trip, or just enjoy reading humorous Midwest writings, A Journey up Highway 5 promises to be an entertaining read!
